The Hidden Environmental Cost:
Wildlife Habitat Loss Above Flat Rock Dam
The proposed removal of Flat Rock and Huroc Dams threatens to destroy nearly 200 acres of established wetland and aquatic habitat that countless species have called home for generations.
Over the past century, a thriving ecosystem has developed around the impoundment, creating critical habitat for migratory waterfowl, nesting sites for herons and eagles, and vital shelter for numerous amphibian and reptile species including painted turtles, snapping turtles, and various frog species that depend on the specific conditions of our shallow backwaters.
The dam removal would drain approximately 188 acres of water surface, reducing water levels by about ten feet and dramatically altering or eliminating these specialized habitats.
Wildlife that has adapted to these conditions for nearly 100 years would face immediate displacement with nowhere to go, as similar shallow, protected backwater habitats are increasingly rare in our developed region.
